Hong Kong-based mobile games developer Animoca Brands has inked a license agreement with world-renowned gaming titan Atari Interactive to launch the blockchain-based version of its popular amusement park management game RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch and tactical strategy game Goon Squad.
Per a press release recently published in December, the partnership will grant Animoca Brands global rights to both produce and release the blockchain iteration of both games.
With over 19 million downloads worldwide, RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch remains a widely popular theme park management simulation game available both on iOS and Android. Following RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch, in 2017, Atari has also launched Goon Squad, a multiplayer brawler video game that allows gamers to navigate through an underworld run by gangsters by going through card battles, with the ultimate goal of building a criminal empire.
On top of the licensing agreement, a memorandum of understanding has also been inked between Animoca Brands and Atari to establish a strategic partnership in an effort to explore further opportunities in blockchain technology in relation to gaming.
As Atari Group and main shareholder Frédéric Chesnais stated in the release:
“We are proud and delighted to enter into this long-term and strategic relationship with Animoca Brands, which also allows us to become a shareholder in one of the most exciting innovators in the world of decentralized gaming. We hope that this agreement paves the way to further cooperation on other Atari products.”
Prior to Animoca’s partnership with Atari, the mobile gaming developer has also appointed Microsoft Studios creator and Xbox project co-founder Ed Fries as the company’s advisor tasked to enhance the firm’s mobile blockchain development capabilities and operational headquarter.
The Atari games’ blockchain versions are expected to be released in the second half of this year.
